Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair [c] is a 2012 visual novel developed by Spike Chunsoft. It is the second game in the Danganronpa franchise following Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (2010). It was first released in Japan for PlayStation Portable in July 2012, and a port for PlayStation Vita was released in Japan in October 2013.
The three games, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (2010), Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (2012), and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (2017) have similar premises. Sixteen talented students who stand out in different fields are trapped by a bear-like machine, Monokuma.
The first game, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, was released for the PlayStation Portable in 2010; the second game, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, was released in 2012; and the third game, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, was released for the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation Vita in 2017.
The anime is the second animated series based on Spike Chunsoft's Danganronpa video game franchise, and serves as a conclusion to the "Hope's Peak Academy" [b] arc established in the previously released games Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc and Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair. Following the events of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Makoto Naegi, the Ultimate Hope, and his fellow former classmates, detective Kyoko Kirigiri, swimmer Aoi Asahina, and fortune-teller Yasuhiro Hagakure, are brought together to an abandoned overseas branch of Hope's Peak Academy where the top members of the Future Foundation are assembled.
Danganronpa was a commercial success and earned positive reviews for the handling of the cast and story. It won awards, though critics were divided on the lack of challenging difficulty in solving class trials and its mini games. A sequel, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, was released in 2012.
In the light of the success, the game received two sequels (Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony), a side story shooter game (Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls), an anime adaptation (Danganronpa: The Animation) and various novels and manga.
