Use {{Italic title}} to italicize the part of the title before the first parenthesis. Use {{Italic disambiguation}} to italicize the part of the title in the parenthesis. Use the {{DISPLAYTITLE:}} magic word or {{Italic title|string=}} template for titles with a mix of italic and roman text, as at List of Sex and the City episodes and The Hustler.

A related issue is style in the titles of books or journal papers when reproduced in citations. For example, some biology books and papers correctly use italics for Latin species names in the text, but don't use italics for this purpose in the title, for whatever reason (perhaps because graphic designers don't seem to like bold italics).
Quotations must always be clearly identified as such using double quotation marks ("quoted text") for quotations shorter than about 40 words. For quotations longer than 40 words, use the HTML tag <blockquote>like this around quoted material</blockquote> or the template {{ Quote }} , which has optional parameters to include citations.
Catalogues indicated by a name that is not an actual book title are not italicized. Articles about a set of works belonging to the same genre, by a single author or composer should not be italicized. I believe song titles usually go in quotes instead of italics because songs are fairly short. Similarly, an article title would go in quotes and a book title would usually be in italics.
