The Kinzua Bridge or the Kinzua Viaduct (/ ˈ k ɪ n z uː /, [2] /-z uː ə /) was a railroad trestle that spanned Kinzua Creek in McKean County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The bridge was 301 feet (92 m) tall and 2,052 feet (625 m) long. Most of its structure collapsed during a tornado in July 2003.
Eventually, the GR&I abandoned the trestle and buried it intact within a wall of dirt above the culvert." The Porter Hollow Embankment and Culvert, also known as the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad Culvert, is a stone bridge and trestle over the Stegman Creek along the White Pine Trail in Algoma Township, Michigan.
Goat Canyon Trestle is a wooden trestle in San Diego County, California. [1] At a length of 597–750 feet (182–229 m), it is the world's largest all-wood trestle. [1] [8] [10] [11] Goat Canyon Trestle was built in 1933 as part of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway, after one of the many tunnels through the Carrizo Gorge collapsed.
More than 100 trestle bridges, old mining towns, and wildlife including bighorn sheep and elk add to the allure. Highlights: Mount Rushmore and bison-packed Custer State Park are both just a short ...
After the route was abandoned in 1947, the rails were taken up and salvagers removed a few of the timbers. The trestle is still essentially intact, however, and is a striking feature of the landscape near Cloudcroft. [3] It is a large trestle bridge, in fact huge relative to the size of the single-tier Bridge A 249 a short ways away. [2]
The bridge was a low structure 701 feet (210 m) long. After the railroad was abandoned the trestle became part of the Blue Ox Trail, a recreational trail used by hikers and snowmobilers. More than one-third of it was burned by arson in April 2015. [4] [5] Efforts have been made to raise funds to rebuild the destroyed portion of the bridge. [6]
In 2019, the city offered to take ownership of the bridge to prevent demolition. [9] The city held a design contest for reuse of the bridge; the winning proposal, announced in June 2021, would turn the trestle sections of the bridge into a public park. [10] On June 29, 2021, the bascule span was damaged by a fire of unknown origin. [11]
