The house occupies the site of the former manor house known as Walton Hall, which was the seat of the Foljambe family in the 16th and 17th centuries. Several members of the family served as High Sheriff of Derbyshire. Mary, Queen of Scots stayed for two nights in February 1568 on her way from Bolton Castle to Tutbury Castle. [1]

The house was built by Sir Francis Rodes in around 1583-84, evidenced by the date 1583 on the porch and 1584 on the Great Chamber chimneypiece and is probably by Robert Smythson, [1] designer of several of the most famous Elizabethan houses, who worked with Sir Francis's patron, [1] the wealthy Earl of Shrewsbury.
In 1882 he migrated to New Zealand and about this time he left Sutton Scarsdale Hall in the care of his cousin William Arkwright. The manor house was built in the 1840s for Francis Wright of the Butterley Iron Company. He sold the estate to Sir Andrew Barclay Walker, 1st Baronet in 1888. The baronetcy was created for him in 1886. The house was used as a Red Cross hospital during World War II. [61] Osmaston Manor was demolished in 1964. [62]
Bretby Hall is a country house at Bretby, Derbyshire, England, north of Swadlincote and east of Burton upon Trent on the border with Staffordshire. It is a Grade II listed building . [ 1 ] The name Bretby means "dwelling place of Britons".
