In August 2011, inmate Joe Villarreal escaped from FCI El Reno, where he was serving a 147-month sentence for drug trafficking. He was apprehended in the city of El Reno several hours later. Villarreal was subsequently sentenced to an additional 46 months in prison for the escape and for possessing a shank in the prison prior to his escape. [7]

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is an agency of the United States Department of Justice that is responsible for all federal prisons in the country and provides for the care, custody, and control of federal prisoners.
It is one of three prisons in the county; the other two are state prisons located in the county seat of Susanville. In 2007 half the adults in Susanville worked in one of the three facilities; together the three prisons hold approximately 11,000 inmates. [2] Prisons are the major employers in the area since the timber industry declined.
