David Marshall Williams (November 13, 1900 – January 8, 1975) was an American firearms designer and convicted murderer who invented the floating chamber and the short-stroke gas piston. Both designs used the high-pressure gas generated in or near the breech of the firearm to operate the action of semi-automatic firearms like the M1 Carbine.
The Williams gun was a Confederate gun that was classified as a 1-lb cannon. It was designed by Captain D.R. Williams, of Covington, Kentucky, who later served as an artillery captain with a battery of his design. It was a breech-loading, rapid-fire cannon that was operated by a hand-crank.
The company grew to be a foremost manufacturer of gun sights, competing with rivals such as Lyman, Redfield, Pacific, King, and Williams gun sight companies. [ citation needed ] Still in business in Gladstone, Michigan , Marble Arms remains an important member of the firearm and shooting sports industry.
