Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (18 November 1888 – 28 February 1989) [1] [2] was an Indian yoga teacher, ayurvedic healer and scholar. He is seen as one of the most important gurus of modern yoga, [3] and is often called "Father of Modern Yoga" for his wide influence on the development of postural yoga.
Yogendra innovated modern methods to teach yoga, initiating research in yoga, particularly in the field of yoga therapy. He authored several books on yoga and started the journal Yoga in 1933. He was also a poet, writing under the pen name 'Mastamani'.
Iyengar was one of the earliest students of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who is often referred to as "the father of modern yoga". [4] He has been credited with popularizing yoga, first in India and then around the world. [5] The Indian government awarded Iyengar the Padma Shri in 1991, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2014.
