Gatineau (/ ˈ ɡ æ t ɪ n oʊ / GAT-in-oh; French: ⓘ) is a city in southwestern Quebec, Canada. It is located on the northern bank of the Ottawa River, immediately across from Ottawa, Ontario. Gatineau is the largest city in the Outaouais administrative region of Quebec and is also part of Canada's National Capital Region.
The section of Route 148 between Lachute and Buckingham was the only major route on the north shore of the Ottawa River between communities in the eastern Outaouais region and Gatineau and Montreal. This section, especially the section between Masson-Angers and Montebello , has been the site of numerous fatal accidents over the last few years.
