Mount Sterling, often written as Mt. Sterling, [5] is a home rule-class city [6] in Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 7,558 as of the 2020 census, [3] up from 6,895 in 2010. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and the principal city of the Mount Sterling micropolitan area.

[2] With regard to the sale of alcohol, it is classified as a moist county—a county in which alcohol sales are prohibited (a dry county), but containing a "wet" city where package alcohol sales are allowed, in this case Mount Sterling. As of the 2000 census , the μSA had a population of 40,195 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 44,046).
