Fort railway station is a major rail hub in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The station is served by Sri Lanka Railways , with many inter-city and commuter trains entering each day. Fort Station is the main rail gateway to central Colombo; it is the terminus of most intercity trains in the country.
All stations serving narrow gauge tracks have been closed with the exception of the Maradana to Avissawella section, as it was converted to broad gauge. In 1906, a project was launched to reorganise the railway within the Colombo area. Colombo Terminus Station was closed and replaced by the new Maradana Station. After leaving Nawalapitiya station, The number 1046 Badulla-Colombo Night Mail Train, which was commenced from Badulla to Colombo Fort, meets at Inguru Oya Railway Station. The Train continues its journey passing Hatton, [12] Nanuoya, Ambewela and at 4:00am, it reaches Pattipola, the highest altitude railway station in Sri Lanka.
