The goal of the operation is to eliminate the aneurysm and to preserve or repair the aortic valve. The operation may include replacement of the aortic root. Replacement of the root is usually not necessary if its diameter is less than 40 to 45 mm. In those instances replacement of the ascending aorta is sufficient.
