Throughout its history, the NSCAA All-America teams have not necessarily included exactly eleven players, nor has there been consistency with regards to the positions picked or number of players in each position. The selection was also open to Division II and Division III players until 1988 when it became exclusively for Division I players.

The team is currently ranked fourth in the nation under the Division I NSCAA/adidas National Rankings (last updated Tuesday, November 6, 2007). In the 2007 season, the team achieved its highest national ranking in school history when they reached #4 on October 23. The previous highest ranking was in the 2005 season at eighth in the country.
After many months of extended unofficial discussion, on August 22, 2016, NCAA Division I men's coaches and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) officially began an "informational
