The Oakland Medical Center was the first of the Kaiser Permanente hospitals, and opened in 1942 as a result of the acquisition of the Fabiola charity hospital (which operated from 1887 to 1932 before being sold to Samuel Merritt Hospital) by the Permanente Foundation, founded by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Sidney Garfield. [1]

The history of high-rises in Oakland began with the completion of the nine-story Bank of America Building in 1907. A nine-story section was later added to the same building. [3] It remained the tallest building in the city until 1914, when the Oakland City Hall, at 320 feet (98 m), became the tallest. [4]

Construction of a 450-space BART parking garage at the southern end of the site began in mid-2011; it opened on September 15, 2014. [ 16 ] [ 17 ] [ 18 ] A 90-unit residential building was constructed in 2013–2016, followed by a 385-unit residential complex with 33,000 square feet (3,100 m 2 ) of retail space constructed in 2015–2020.
All AC Transit All Nighter routes provide timed transfers at Broadway and 14th Street in downtown Oakland. Most routes operate daily including holidays, generally from midnight to 5:00 AM. Weekend morning service on Routes 800 and 801 extends until 6 AM on Saturdays and 8 AM on Sundays, corresponding to the start of BART service for the day.
