Gohan begins training for the World Tournament, and he takes Goten along. During the training, Goten reveals that he can become a Super Saiyan at nearly half the age Gohan did. He also reveals that Trunks is stronger than him. Their training is interrupted by Videl, who has arrived to take her first flying lesson.
Gohan saves them as they attempt to gather the Dragon Balls to wish Broly away. Gohan is no match for Broly who directs a lethal sphere of energy towards Videl, Trunks and Goten. In distress, Gohan races towards them and attempts to deflect it and manages to shield them from the blast but the ensuing explosion renders them all unconscious.
Goku fights Frieza first and quickly gains the advantage but the latter deduces that he is holding back, so the two foes agree to fight at full power. Goku transforms into a new godly Super Saiyan form with a glowing blue hair and aura (later dubbed Super Saiyan Blue) and Frieza assumes his new gold-plated form, which he dubs Golden Frieza .
With encouragement from Gohan, Goten and Trunks gain the upper hand. Abo and Kado merge into their larger, more powerful form, Aka. Aka devastates Goten and Trunks so they perform the Fusion Dance, fail their first attempt, but succeed with in the second. Now fully powered as Gotenks, he quickly appears to defeat Aka.
