The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (abbreviated as 3rd MAW) is the major west coast aviation unit of the United States Marine Corps. It is headquartered at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, in San Diego, California, and provides the aviation combat element for I Marine Expeditionary Force.
It is located in Miramar, a community of San Diego, California, about 14 miles (23 km) north of downtown San Diego. The airfield has been named Mitscher Field since 1955, after Admiral M.A. Mitscher , who was the commander of Task Force 58 during World War II . [ 2 ]

Marine Aircraft Group 16 is a United States Marine Corps aviation unit based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar that is currently composed of four V-22 Osprey squadrons, four CH-53 Super Stallion squadrons, one Personnel Support Detachment, and an aviation logistics squadron.
Upon arrival to Kuwait the forces supported the mission. Since then the unit has been actively deployed in support of operations in Iraq. In 2006 reservists from San Diego H&S Detachment mobilized for combat operations in the Anbar Province of Al Fallujah, Iraq with 1st Battalion-24th Marines, Weapons Company.
Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38 was commissioned on 1 September 1967 and assigned to Marine Wing Headquarters Group 3, 3D Marine Aircraft Wing. On 1 July 1971, the squadron was re-designated as Marine Wing Communications Squadron 38 and assigned to Marine Air Control Group 38, 3D Marine Aircraft Wing.
