The Grand Duchy of Hesse (1806–1816), known as the Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine from 1816 to 1918, was a former state in Hesse, Germany. The Grand Duchy was formed in 1806 after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. Napoleon then elevated the former Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt to the level of grand duchy.
These territories were reorganised into the Province of Upper Hesse. Also during this period Hesse-Darmstadt became the Grand Duchy of Hesse. The provinces of the Grand Duchy were dissolved on 31 July 1848 and replaced by administrative regions (Regierungsbezirke); this was reversed on 12 May 1852.

GDP per capita adjusted for purchasing power was €47,800 or 159% of the EU27 average in the same year. The GDP per employee was 127% of the EU average.
