The Purification Rundown, also known as the Purif [1] or the Hubbard Method, [2] is a pseudoscientific procedure that advocates of Scientology claim is a detoxification program. There is no evidence for its efficacy in detoxification, and significant evidence from clinicians that it is dangerous.
It uses the Purification Rundown, a detoxification program invented by L. Ron Hubbard as part of Scientology's Bridge to Total Freedom. This rundown has been criticized by many doctors as pseudoscientific and medically dangerous. [1] [5] [6] It was reported in October 2007 that 838 people had completed the New York program. [7]
Purification: An Illustrated Answer To Drugs (New Era Publications, 1984. ISBN 87-7336-350-2) is an earlier, illustrated explanation of the Purification Rundown. [2] Another illustrated book, Narconon New Life Detoxification Program: the effective purification program by L. Ron Hubbard. (Bridge Publications, 1991.
The program, adapted from Hubbard's Purification Rundown, consists of six elements: exercise, sauna, supplements, sufficient liquids, regular diet with fresh vegetables, and adequate sleep. According to Narconon spokesman John Bitinas, there are more than 200 beds at Narconon Arrowhead, the program's flagship center in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma .
One of the earliest rundowns on the Bridge, which most Scientologists are expected to do, is the Purification Rundown. The "purif" is a sauna-and-sweat detoxification program requiring a high intake of vitamins, allegedly [b] designed to remove toxins from the body that would inhibit one's recall needed for future auditing.
The Second Chance Program was established by Rick Pendery, a former real estate developer and veteran Scientologist. [1] During the 1970s he worked for Narconon, [2] a drug rehabilitation program linked with the Church of Scientology, [3] eventually becoming Executive Director for the U.S.-wide organization. [2]
Compiled from earlier Hubbard bulletins. Suggests harmful chemicals lodge in the fatty tissues of the body and affect the mind. Describes how these can be removed through a sauna and vitamin regimen. This book is a basic text for the Church of Scientology's Purification Rundown. [11] The Creation of Human Ability (July 1954)
Narconon and Purification Rundown are Scientology programs that purport to clean the human body of toxins and drugs respectively. Their method consists of very long saunas over many days, extremely large (possibly toxic) doses of vitamins including niacin , and Scientology 'training routines', sometimes including attempts at telekinesis .
