Amoretti breaks with conventional love poetry in a number of ways. In most sonnet sequences in the Petrarchan tradition, the speaker yearns for a lover who is sexually unavailable. Not only is there a conflict between spiritual and physical love, but the love object is often already married; it is an adulterous love.

The Whitsun Weddings is a collection of 32 poems by Philip Larkin. It was first published by Faber in the United Kingdom on 28 February 1964. It was a commercial success, by the standards of poetry publication, with the first 4,000 copies being sold within two months. A United States edition appeared some seven months later.
The collection comprises twenty love poems, followed by a final poem titled The Song of Despair. Except for the final poem, the individual poems in the collection are untitled. Although the poems draw inspiration from Neruda's real-life love experiences as a young man, the book is not solely dedicated to a single lover.
