The name "Zion Crossroads" was probably created from the nearby Zion United Methodist Church when the new U.S. Route 250 crossed U.S. Route 15 in the 1930s. The district is located 1.5 miles (2 km) north of Interstate 64 from exit No. 136, "Zion Crossroads." The district is roughly bounded by U.S. Route 15 and Virginia Routes 22 and 613. The area is named for a natural spring noted by Thomas Jefferson as possessing "some medicinal virtue."

The highway passes through far northern Fluvanna County before entering Louisa County at the highway's intersection with US 15 (James Madison Highway) at Zion Crossroads. US 250 continues as Three Notch Road through Ferncliff , where the highway meets the southern end of SR 208 (Courthouse Road).
From June 2013 to February 2014, the Virginia Department of Transportation converted the existing interchange between US 15 and I-64, in Zion Crossroads, to a DDI, the first in the state, with final construction completed by mid-April 2014. [4] [5] [6] A similar interchange between US 15 and I-66 was completed in January 2017. [7]
