This is compounded by the fact that the majority of cancer patients will be in this age group. Age in itself is one of the most important risk factors for developing cancer. Currently, 60% of newly diagnosed malignant tumors and 70% of cancer deaths occur in people aged 65 years or older. [ 2 ]
In the United States there has been an increase in the 5-year relative survival rate between people diagnosed with cancer in 1975-1977 (48.9%) and people diagnosed with cancer in 2007-2013 (69.2%); these figures coincide with a 20% decrease in cancer mortality from 1950 to 2014. [8]
PNETs and Ewing’s sarcoma are described as appearing on the same histologic spectrum. [8] [9] Treatment of PNETs is the same as extra-osseous Ewing’s sarcoma, with resection of the whole tumor alongside chemotherapy and radiation. Outcomes however are poor as PNET remains an aggressive cancer as a member of the Ewing Family of Tumors.
Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS), although a rare type of tumor, is one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas, i.e. cancerous tumors, that develop in the soft tissues of elderly individuals. [1] Initially considered to be a type of histiocytoma termed fibrous histiocytoma or myxoid variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma, [ 2 ] Angervall et al ...
The recognition that many sarcomas are sensitive to chemotherapy has dramatically improved the survival of patients. For example, in the era before chemotherapy, long-term survival for pediatric patients with localized osteosarcoma was only about 20%, but now has risen to 60–70%.
Angiosarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer that starts in the endothelial cells that line the walls of blood vessels or lymphatic vessels.Since they are made from vascular lining, they can appear anywhere and at any age, but older people are more commonly affected, and the skin is the most affected area, with approximately 60% of cases being cutaneous (skin).
Classic Kaposi sarcoma most commonly appears early on the toes and soles as reddish, violaceous, or bluish-black macules and patches that spread and coalesce to form nodules or plaques. [35]: 599 A small percentage of these patients may have visceral lesions. In most cases the treatment involves surgical removal of the lesion.
Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), also termed pleomorphic myofibrosarcoma, [1] high-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma, and high-grade myofibrosarcoma, [2] is characterized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a rare, poorly differentiated neoplasm (i.e., an abnormal growth of cells that have an unclear identity and/or cell of origin).
