In 1717 a Congregationalist parish was established, and in 1789 the town of Huntington was incorporated, including what is now neighboring Monroe. The site of the early parish became the center of the new town. In addition to its civic function, the area also developed some industry, powered by the waters of the Farmill River and Means Brook.
Huntington built its first five-story building in 1878, on the intersection's southwest corner. Four of P. W.'s five sons became partners during the 1890s and early 1900s. The bank was incorporated in 1905 as The Huntington National Bank of Columbus. [11] Huntington died in 1918 shortly after turning the bank over to his sons. [12]

Halesite is named after Nathan Hale, a captain and spy in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War who arrived at Long Island at Huntington Harbor (at the site now named Halesite) just prior to his capture and execution. Brown, a Huntington Fire Commissioner for 29 years before his retirement in 1960, was the elder half-brother of race car driver David Bruce-Brown. [3] In 1930, Brown donated a private road to the Town of Huntington, named Browns Road in his honor. [4] Brown sold the house in 1939. [5] (He died at Huntington on October 3, 1964, age 86 years.) [4]
