The cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the venerated title of the Immaculate Conception. It was built from 1875 to 1903 and consecrated on 11 June 1911. It is on the site of the first parish church in Monaco, built in 1252 and dedicated to its patron Saint Nicholas.

The original intention of the Superior of the English Jesuits, Fr Randal Lythgoe, was for the church to have a capacity for 900 people. When this was found too expensive the church was built for a capacity of 475. The cost was £5,800 which came from multiple private benefactors. [6] [5] In 1844 the foundation stone was laid by Fr Lythgoe.
