Charles Fothergill (23 May 1782 – 22 May 1840) was a businessman, journalist and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in York, England in 1782, [1] a member of a prominent Quaker family. He developed an interest in natural history at an early age and he published the Ornithologia Britannica at the age of 17.

He was born on 21 February 1908 the son of Dr Leopold Fothergill, a physician. He was educated at St. Joseph's College, Dumfries. He then attended Durham University graduating BSc and then receiving a doctorate (PhD) in 1934. [1] Fothergill worked in the Department of Botany and Genetics at King's College, Newcastle.
