New Westminster (colloquially known as New West) is a city in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, Canada, and a member municipality of the Metro Vancouver Regional District.
New Westminster City Council is the governing body of New Westminster, British Columbia. The council consists of the mayor of New Westminster, and six councillors elected to serve a four-year term. [1] [2] The council was the first municipal government to be established in mainland British Columbia in 1860 by the Municipal Council Act. [3]
Prior to 1873, the head of the local government was titled the president of New Westminster, and was appointed by members of the municipal council, rather than being directly elected by New Westminster's residents. [2] [3] [4] The current mayor of New Westminster is Patrick Johnstone, who is the 38th mayor of the city. [3]
This land district is named for the city of New Westminster, which at the time of its creation was the capital of the Mainland Colony. Greater Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, the Sunshine Coast and the Highway 99 corridor up to and including the Resort Municipality of Whistler, are all within this land district, as well as Savary, Raza, and East and West Redonda Islands.
The 1988–1997 edition of this riding was created in 1987 from parts of Burnaby and New Westminster—Coquitlam ridings. The riding consisted of the City of New Westminster and the southern part of the District Municipality of Burnaby. It was abolished in 1996 when it was merged into New Westminster—Coquitlam—Burnaby.
Community First New Westminster (CFNW) is a municipal political party in the Canadian city of New Westminster, British Columbia. They were founded in 2022 in preparation for the 2022 British Columbia municipal elections. They are led by Patrick Johnstone, the current mayor of New Westminster.
Tipperary Park is a community park located in the Downtown neighbourhood of New Westminster, just Northeast of New Westminster City Hall. [2] The park technically only includes the grounds Northeast of 4th Street, however, the park's name is often used to refer to the adjacent Friendship Gardens and the front lawn of the City Hall.
