Luke Townsend – who was the au pair for James Townsend's daughter, Mary, prior to his emancipation – established the first Sunday School in Putnam County and is credited as the founder of the congregation that eventually became Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Greencastle, Indiana, at one time the largest Black church in Indiana. [11]
Founded in 1834, Kalida was the first county seat of Putnam County. [5] Kalida is a name derived from Greek meaning "beautiful". [6] A post office has been in operation in Kalida since 1834. [7] Kalida was incorporated as a village in 1839. [8] The county seat was transferred to Ottawa in 1866. [8]
The Putnam County Courthouse, in Hennepin, was built in 1837, and is the oldest county courthouse in Illinois still serving its original purpose. [4] Abraham Lincoln visited the courthouse, including when he campaigned for a Congressional seat in September 1845. The Putnam County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
