The name refers to the neighborhood's topography and numerous higher educational institutions: Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, Pembroke College, and the since–relocated Bryant University. Prior to Brown University's 1770 relocation to Providence, the area was known as Prospect Hill. [3]
Brown University acquired the building in 1922 to house faculty and graduate students and converted the first floor into its faculty club. [6] [7] The new facility opened in March 1923 on Visiting Day in the presence of "more than 200 alumni, many members of the corporation and board of trustees, and practically all the faculty." [15] [16]
On April 3, 2019, Brown University announced that the aluminum bleachers and pressbox would be replaced with a new 3-story, 22,500 sf stadium facility, complete with dedicated team locker rooms and training, coaches' offices, and public restrooms and concessions. The facility was completed in February 2020. [4]

"Class of" is used to denote the graduation class of individuals who attended Brown, but did not or have not graduated.
The Women's College in Brown University, known as Pembroke College, was founded in October 1891. Upon its 1971 merger with the College of Brown University, Pembroke's campus was absorbed into the larger Brown campus. The Pembroke campus is bordered by Meeting, Brown, Bowen, and Thayer Streets and sits three blocks north of Brown's central campus.
