The main languages spoken in Camarines Sur are the Coastal Bikol (especially Central Bikol) and Inland Bikol group of languages. The latter is a group of languages that includes Albay Bikol group and Rinconada Bikol , while the former just consists dialects.
The division of the language into different dialects is mainly because of the influence of other Bikol and non-Bikol languages surrounding the region. The Canaman dialect, despite being used only by a small portion of the population in Camarines Sur, is the standard form of Central Bikol used in literature, Catholic religious rites and mass media.
The language retains the proto-Philippine schwa vowel /ə/ that has disappeared in most Philippine languages like Cebuano, Tagalog and even the neighboring Coastal Bikol language. In Nabua, Camarines Sur, (where the language is believed to have originated), the vowel also disappeared through normal development and evolution.
Other Bikol languages are Rinconada Bikol, spoken in southern part of Camarines Sur province, Pandan Bikol spoken in northern part of Catanduanes island and the Albay Bikol group of languages that include Buhinon, Libon, West Miraya and East Miraya. The language is largely intelligible with Mount Iraya Agta on the other side of the lake. The Rinconada Agta live primarily in forests near rural barangays of Buhi , Iriga (including a settlement in the Ilian area), and Baao in Camarines Sur (Lobel 2013:68).
