In 1903 community leaders approached the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration, who ran St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, to build a hospital in Michigan City. St. Anthony's Hospital was founded, funded in part by a donation in the name of Mrs. John H. Barker. The cornerstone was laid in 1903. [2]

Franciscan Health Lafayette Central, previously known as St. Elizabeth Central, was a 155-bed hospital in Lafayette, Indiana, United States, and part of the Franciscan Health hospital system. Previously known as the St. Elizabeth Medical Center, the hospital was renamed in 2009 during the construction of St. Elizabeth East .

Greater Lafayette Health Services announced in late 2005 a plan to close Home Hospital, and construct a new facility to replace it on the city's southeast side, with St. Elizabeth Medical Center remaining open for critical patient care. Work on the new facility commenced in late 2006, with occupation planned to occur in December 2009.
