The American Water Spaniel (often abbreviated to AWS) is a breed of spaniel which originated in the United States. It was developed in the state of Wisconsin during the 19th century from a number of other breeds, including the Irish and English Water Spaniels .
A 16th-century hawking party accompanied by Water Spaniels. In 1565, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, the husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, was a given a Water Spaniel by James Melville of Halhill. The dog had been brought to Scotland by an English merchant. [1] In 1570, Dr John Caius described the Water Spaniel.
The Irish Water Spaniel is a sturdy, cobby dog native to Ireland. The coat, consisting of dense curls, sheds very little (see Moult). [1] A topknot of long, loose curls grows downward from the crown of the head and often covers the eyes, with a "beard" growing at the back of the throat often being accompanied by "sideburns".
According to the American Water Spaniel Club, this is a rare breed with only 3,000 in existence, mainly in the US. It is extremely uncommon to find an American water spaniel in other countries.
