Cayuga Lake (/ k ə ˈ juː ɡ ə /, / k eɪ ˈ juː ɡ ə / or / k aɪ ˈ juː ɡ ə /) is the longest of central New York's glacial Finger Lakes, and is the second largest in surface area (marginally smaller than Seneca Lake) and second largest in volume. It is just under 39 miles (63 km) long.
The first winery in the area was founded in 1980, although grapes were grown on the shores of Cayuga Lake for the large wineries in Hammondsport before then. [5] In 1981, four wineries on the lake banded together to form the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, the first of its kind in New York State.
An American Viticultural Area (AVA) is a designated appellation for American wine in the United States distinguishable by geographic, geologic, and climatic features, with boundaries defined by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) of the United States Department of the Treasury. [1]
The Finger Lakes AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in Upstate New York, south of Lake Ontario.It was established in 1982 [4] and encompasses the eleven Finger Lakes, but the area around Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga Lakes contain the vast majority of vineyard plantings in the AVA.
Route 104A takes the trail north toward the lake shore, through the village of Red Creek, but turns northeast and hits the county line still some distance from the lake. [ 7 ] The Seaway Trail enters Cayuga County heading northeast along Route 104A and soon enters the village of Fair Haven , on the southern shore of Little Sodus Bay.
It was located on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake on the north side of the Great Gully Brook, about 10 miles (16 km) south of the large 17th-century Cayuga town of Tiohero; and approximately along the southern line of the modern-day township of Springport, New York.
