Joliet Junior College, established in 1901, was the first public junior college in the nation. It was the brain child of William Rainey Harper, president of the University of Chicago, and J. Stanley Brown, the superintendent of Joliet Township High School. The college's initial enrollment was six students. William Rainey Harper

By 1922, 37 states had set up 70 junior colleges, enrolling about 150 students each. Meanwhile, another 137 were privately operated, with about 60 students each.
This newer part of the museum also connects to the historic Joliet Chamber of Commerce Clubhouse next door (now known as the Renaissance Center of the City Center campus of Joliet Junior College) and to the JJC Renaissance Center's main dining room, which is staffed by the college's hospitality and culinary school students and open to the public.

Giarrante is a lifelong Joliet resident who attended Sacred Heart Grade School, Joliet Catholic High School, and Joliet Junior College. He spent 22 years as a firefighter, serving as president of the Joliet Firefighters Local 44 for 16 years. Giarrante has served on the Joliet Park Board and the Joliet Public Service Committee.
