Goku later names his first son Gohan in his grandfather's honor. In the anime, he later appears as an assistant to Annin (アンニン), the ruler of the "magical furnace". He is voiced by Osamu Saka in the Japanese version of the original series, Kinpei Azusa in Bardock: The Father of Goku, and Shigeru Chiba in Dragon Ball Kai.
However, Gohan successfully heals Goku with a spare one. Krillin and Gohan are quickly defeated by Salza but Goku soon emerges. Cooler taunts Goku by further injuring Piccolo. As Gohan finishes training with Piccolo, they meet up with Goku, Master Roshi, Tien, and Chiaotzu. At Gohan's request, Goku and Tien have a fight against Gohan and Piccolo to practice for the Tournament of Power. Although Tien views this as a practice match and wants to avoid injuring anyone, Gohan and Goku take the fight seriously.
With encouragement from Gohan, Goten and Trunks gain the upper hand. Abo and Kado merge into their larger, more powerful form, Aka. Aka devastates Goten and Trunks so they perform the Fusion Dance, fail their first attempt, but succeed with in the second. Now fully powered as Gotenks, he quickly appears to defeat Aka.
Goku teaches Goten and Trunks the fusion dance, but he is forced to return to the afterlife, where he meets up with Gohan. Wanting to test the Z Sword, Goku accidentally breaks it, awakening an ancient Kaiō-shin who starts performing a 24-hour ritual to make Gohan stronger.
Goku, Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, Oolong, Yajirobe and Master Roshi travel to the New Namek and upon arrival encounter an army of large robots abusing the Namekians. They learn that Frieza's brother Cooler , who Goku was thought to have killed , is responsible.
