England took part in the 1970 FIFA World Cup, qualifying from their group after beating Romania and Czechoslovakia but losing to Brazil. The team then went out in the quarterfinals after losing 3–2 (after extra time) to West Germany .
If the final was still level after 120 minutes then the match would be replayed at a later date. The stage began on 14 June with the quarter-finals, and ended one week later with the final match of the tournament held at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, in which Brazil defeated Italy 4–1 to claim a then-record third World Cup triumph.
