The first American telenovela was the soap opera Port Charles (a spin-off of ABC's long-running soap General Hospital), which, although starting off as a traditional soap when it debuted in 1997, adopted a 13-week telenovela-style storyline format beginning in 2000 which continued in use until the show's cancellation in 2003.
