Black howler monkey ('baboon') in Belize. Community Baboon Sanctuary is a protected area in Belize.It was established in 1985 to help address the threats of agriculture, logging and hunting of the black howler monkey ('baboon') and to educate locals and visitors about the importance of biodiversity, sustainability, and to promote the economic development of the Bermudian Landing community.
The Yucatán black howler, or Guatemalan black howler, (Alouatta pigra) is a species of howler monkey, a type of New World monkey, from Central America. It is found in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico, in and near the Yucatán Peninsula. It lives in evergreen, semideciduous and lowland rain forests.
The Yucatan black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra), one of the two primate species recorded from the area, is endemic to a small area of the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize and the Peten. This species was decimated by a yellow fever epidemic in 1956/1957 that swept through the Alouatta population throughout most of the country.
The reserve protects two of Belize's high-risk species –Central American Spider Monkey and White lipped Peccary. Three species – Baird's Tapir, Central American Spider Monkey, and Yucatán Black Howler Monkey are globally ‘Endangered’ under IUCN classification, and one (White-lipped Peccary) is classified as ‘Vulnerable’.
The sanctuary contains 6,600 ha (16,000 acres) of lagoons, creeks, log wood swamps, broad leaf forest and pine savanna, home to hundreds of species of wildlife. The sanctuary protects globally endangered species including the Central American river turtle (locally known as the hickatee), Yucatán black howler monkey and yellow-headed amazon. [3]
