The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is the tenth-busiest passenger crossing on the Canada–United States border, and the only land crossing for almost 700 miles (1125 km). [3] It serves as the northern terminus of Interstate 75 (I-75).
The bridge connects the northern part of Florida with the Gulf Coast and was estimated to be used by 50,000 vehicles per day in 2011. The Scenic Highway overpass that runs over and perpendicular to the I-10 bridge (seen running left to right at the very bottom of the above picture) was also replaced by a new bridge in 2015.
The Commission under ordinance, comp plan 13.1.4(c) and Florida Statute 14.295 has the authority to protect our precious attributes by re-establishing all the above as a Special Protection Corridor.
The highway returns to Interstate standard for about 50 miles until it reaches the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge, which carries undivided lanes to the Canada–US border in the middle of the bridge, where I-75 terminates. The Thousand Islands Bridge, which carries I-81 over part of the Saint Lawrence River, is an undivided two-lane road.
