The town of East Hartford was settled as part of Hartford in the 17th century, primarily as an agricultural outpost, and was separately incorporated in 1783. Main Street was laid out in the 1670s, and became a major roadway between Hartford and communities to the east.

One of the small houses in the New Village served as a local library until it burned in a fire. The Community Building, now the Larson Center after longtime congressman John B. Larson, housed the rental office and two second grade classrooms upstairs. The neighborhood was served by the Little Red School House, which eventually burned down. [8]

Pratt Street is a one-block street in Downtown Hartford, running east-west between Main Street on the east and Trumbull Street (across from the XL Center) in the west.It is lined by fifteen buildings (eight on one side and seven on the other) that are distinctly more modest in scale than those on the surrounding streets, ranging in height from two to six stories.
