The Great Sand Sea is an approximately 72,000 km 2 (28,000 sq mi) sand desert (erg) in the Sahara stretched from western Egypt and eastern Libya in North Africa. Most of the area is covered by sand dunes .

The Grand Erg Oriental (English: 'Great Eastern Sand Sea') is a large erg or "field of sand dunes" in the Sahara Desert. Situated for the most part in Saharan lowlands of northeast Algeria, the Grand Erg Oriental covers an area some 600 km wide by 200 km north to south. The erg's northeastern edge spills over into neighbouring Tunisia.

The Calanshio Sand Sea is the site of the missing World War II B-24 Liberator Lady Be Good. The wreck was discovered 200 km (120 mi) north of Kufra 15 years after it was reported missing in 1943. The crew bailed out believing they were over the sea, when their plane ran out of fuel, and they became lost.
