The Metro authorities deemed the Esplanade-Sealdah section (particularly the incomplete, caved-in west-bound tunnel), to be challenging and impossible to finish by 2023. [8] So, they planned to run trains (brought via completed east-bound tunnel) over a truncated Esplanade-Howrah Maidan section that is almost complete.
