The University of Moratuwa is an independent state university in Katubedda, Moratuwa, Sri Lanka overlooking Bolgoda Lake. It was established as the University of Moratuwa (UoM), Sri Lanka on 22 December 1978 under the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 and operates under the general direction of the University Grants Commission.
The Chancellor is the head of the university and awards all degrees, although most duties are carried out by the Vice-Chancellor. The appointment is made by the President of Sri Lanka, to a distinguished person in academics, clergy or in civil society. The chancellor is Prof. Sanath Nandasiri.
It offers four postgraduate degrees in total, namely, M.Sc., M.Phil., MBA and Ph.D. in agriculture. PGIA's Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program was initiated in 1998 and is the first such Programme offered in Sri Lanka outside Colombo, and the third to be offered by a public university in the country. The University of Ceylon was the only university in Sri Lanka (earlier Ceylon) from 1942 until 1972. It had several constituent campuses at various locations around Sri Lanka. The University of Ceylon Act No. 1 of 1972, replaced it with the University of Sri Lanka which existed from 1973 to 1978.
