Yellow Cow (German: Gelbe Kuh) is a painting by the German artist Franz Marc, dating to 1911. It is one of the artist's most well known works, and is one of several of his depictions of animals in Expressionist style.
The style of the painting is deliberately primitive; the large cow occupies most of the canvas, in a greenish background, which seems to represent her pasture. The cow appears unusually large, in a brownish-yellow colour. Her eyes and nose seems also very big. The title of the painting is an ironic reference to that particular feature. [4]
Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (8 February 1880 – 4 March 1916) [1] was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of German Expressionism.He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became synonymous with the circle of artists collaborating in it.
Warhol's April 1966 show at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York consisted of Cow Wallpaper in one room, and a second room with Warhol's silver helium-filled Clouds. [5]At Warhol's request, the pink and yellow Cow Wallpaper was used as the backdrop to cover all the walls for his 1971 retrospective at the Whitney in New York.
