The name "Wuhan" comes from the two major cities on the banks of the Yangtze River that make up the Wuhan metropolis: "Wu" refers to the city of Wuchang (Chinese: 武昌), which lies on the southern bank of the Yangtze, while "Han" refers to the city of Hankou (Chinese: 汉口), which lies on the northern bank of the Yangtze.
Because of this, prefecture-level cities often overlap in area with county-level cities. Four cities are centrally administered municipalities, which include dense urban areas, suburbs, and large rural areas: Chongqing (32.05 million [ 3 ] ), Shanghai (24.87 million [ 3 ] ), Beijing (21.89 million [ 3 ] ), and Tianjin (13.87 million [ 3 ] ).

The district also borders the prefecture-level city of Xiaogan to the north and west.

[ 4 ] The Hanyang Arsenal is known for its production of the so-called " Hanyang rifle " - an indigenous Asian copy of the German Model 1888 Commission Rifle , which was heavily used in World ...
