Its predecessor, the Saint Benedict Center began in 1941 as a student center in an old furniture store in Harvard Square on the corner of Bow and Arrow Streets, just a half a block from the Harvard Yard. The parish was established in 1847 as the church of St. Benedict after years of local Catholics fighting Protestant opposition to establish a parish. [3] The congregation purchased a former Baptist church which served as its first home. For the first five years, it had no pastor when the Rev. Michael P. Gallagher was assigned to serve the parish.
The first church building on the current site of Holmdel Community Church was constructed by the Baptists in 1705. The current church building was constructed in 1809 (with later additions) and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The Dutch Reformed congregation was originally located nearby and was founded in 1699.
