SC 161 Northbound in Rock Hill. SC 161 is a multi-lane highway, traversing from U.S. Route 21 (US 21) and Interstate 77 (I-77), through the northern part of Rock Hill and north around York, to the back entrance area of Kings Mountain State Park and Kings Mountain National Military Park, and ends at the North Carolina state line.
NC 216 was established in 1930 as a new primary route from US 29/NC 205 to the South Carolina state line. Around 1956, NC 216 was extended north along US 29 for 1.5-mile (2.4 km), then replacing US 29 into Kings Mountain. It then continued north on several upgraded secondary roads to its current terminus on NC 274.
U.S. Route 74 Alternate (US 74A) was established in 1937, this alternate route, along with US 29A, followed the old routing from Kings Mountain to Gastonia, via Bessemer City. A year later, it was renumbered as NC 161 and NC 274 .
In 1937, it replaced a stretch of NC 7 going between Kings Mountain and Gastonia. The old route briefly became alternates for both U.S. Highways before becoming NC 161 and NC 274. In 1938, US 29 was moved onto a new bypass around Kannapolis–China Grove, leaving US 29A on the old route. In 1948, the routes were switched.
