The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (/ ˌ v ɛr ə ˈ z ɑː n oʊ / VERR-ə-ZAH-noh; also referred to as the Narrows Bridge, the Verrazzano Bridge, and simply the Verrazzano) is a suspension bridge connecting the boroughs of Staten Island and Brooklyn in New York City, United States.
The Goethals Bridge (/ ˈ ɡ ɒ θ əl z /) is a pair of cable-stayed bridge spans connecting Elizabeth, New Jersey, to Staten Island, New York, United States. The spans cross a strait known as Arthur Kill, and replaced a cantilever bridge span built in 1928. The bridge is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
It is designated New York State Route 908B (NY 908B), an unsigned reference route. The Interboro Parkway was first proposed in 1901 as part of an extension of Eastern Parkway . There were multiple attempts to construct the parkway between the 1900s and the 1920s, which failed due to a lack of funding and various disagreements over land acquisition.
Construction of the bridge began on March 17, 1952, at a cost of $6.5 million. It opened on May 18, 1955, as the Welfare Island Bridge. [3] The name was changed to the Roosevelt Island Bridge in 1973. [4] When the bridge is open it provides ships with 100 feet (30 m) of vertical clearance.
