[3] Its name and original boundaries were taken from the Jordan Stake of the LDS Church, which at the time spanned the breadth of the Salt Lake Valley from east to west, and the length of the valley from roughly Midvale to the south end of the valley.

He played on the undefeated 1958 West Point team, and in 1959, while team captain, was named an All-American. Legendary Army head coach Earl Blaik, who spent twenty years on the Army coaching staff, called Carpenter "the greatest end I ever coached at West Point." In 1982, Carpenter was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. [5]
After graduation from West Point, Anderson served in the U.S. Army.During the Vietnam War he served two tours with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in South Vietnam.He earned a Silver Star Medal, two Bronze Star Medals and an Air Medal on his first tour, and then another Silver Star Medal, three Bronze Star Medals and ten Air Medals on his second tour.
