The NOAA ordered a new small research vessel in 2004, with Teknicraft of New Zealand designing the ship. In May 2007, All American Marine began construction of the ship in Washington state, and launched the vessel on 15 January 2008. Following sea trials, the ship was christened Manta in Galveston, Texas, on 27 June 2008. [1] [2]
RV Kilo Moana (AGOR-26) is a small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH) oceanographic research ship owned by the US Navy and operated by the University of Hawaii as a part of the U.S Academic Research Fleet and a member of University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS). [1] She was designed to operate in coastal and blue water areas.

A research vessel (RV or R/V) is a ship or boat designed, modified, or equipped to carry out research at sea.Research vessels carry out a number of roles. Some of these roles can be combined into a single vessel but others require a dedicated vessel.
Deep Submergence Vessel NR-1 was a unique United States Navy (USN) nuclear-powered ocean engineering and research submarine, built by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics at Groton, Connecticut. NR-1 was launched on 25 January 1969, completed initial sea trials 19 August 1969, and was home-ported at Naval Submarine Base New London.
The ship was originally designed for the CCG. It is a small research vessel with a length of 33.62 meters (110.3 ft), a breadth of 8.53 meters (28.0 ft) and a weight of nearly 328 tonnes (723,000 lb). It requires nine people to crew the ship and can accommodate 15 people comfortably.
The platform is frequently mistaken for a capsized ocean transport ship. [9] FLIP's last research cruise was in late 2017, with ONR ending its support of the vessel in 2020. [10] It was berthed at the Nimitz Marine Facility pier (Scripps) in Point Loma until being towed away to be scrapped on August 4, 2023.
