Doha is a very old "verse-format" of Indian poetry.It is an independent verse, a couplet, the meaning of which is complete in itself. [1] As regards its origin, Hermann Jacobi had suggested that the origin of doha can be traced to the Greek Hexametre, that it is an amalgam of two hexametres in one line.
Although originally an oral tradition, the genre was incorporated into longer poems, epics and narratives by a number of Indian poets [8] across major Modern Indo-Aryan languages including—Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Rajasthani languages, Bihari languages, Punjabi etc., and can be found in the folk poetry of the tribal people too. [9]
In Hindi, a couplet is called a doha, while in Urdu, it is called a sher. Couplets were the most common form of poetry between the 12th and 18th Centuries, in Hidustani. Famous poets include Kabir, Tulsidas and Rahim Khan-i-Khanan. [10] Kabir (also known as Kabirdas) is thought to be one of the greatest composers of Hindustani couplets.
Chhayavad continued until the latter half of the 1930s, when the golden era of modern Hindi poetry was gradually replaced by social didacticism inspired by rising nationalist fervour. Some of the later poets of this era, like Dinkar, Mahadevi and Bachchan took nationalist and social critiquing within their poetry.

Formerly, the form was extensively employed by court bards to praise royal personages. Chhands are also used extensively in the Nautanki dance-drama tradition of the region, especially in the alha chhand or bir chhand formats. [ 2 ]
