George Richards died in 1888, passing his share of the company to his son. In 1898, Curtis and Richards split, and Joseph Richards became sole owner of the firm in Buchanan. Joseph Richards died in 1906, and the firm passed to his sons, and by 1913 the firm outgrew the building, moving to a larger one on Buchanan's Main Street.
Buchanan was first settled in 1833 by Charles Cowles, who constructed a sawmill near this site. Other settlers followed, and by 1842, when Buchanan was first platted, there were about twelve buildings in or near the village. Early development is not well documented, but a number of mills were built in Buchanan, drawing in workers.
The Clark Equipment Company Administrative Complex is a collection of former manufacturing buildings located at 301-324 East Dewey Street and 204-302 North Red Bud Trail in Buchanan, Michigan. It was the original home of Clark Equipment Company, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. [1]
