The team was founded in 1994 as the Empire Soccer Club, and renamed to New York/New Jersey Metrostars in 1995 [19] and played under this name until the acquisition of the team by Red Bull GmbH in 2006, where the team was renamed to the New York Red Bulls and dropped their association with New Jersey in the team's name.

During the first season of the merger (1976–77), the Nets continued to play on Long Island, although Erving's contract had by then been sold to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Nets transferred to New Jersey then next season and became known as the New Jersey Nets, and later moved to Brooklyn prior to the 2012–13 NBA season.
The 2014 edition of the Classic is the same as the 2013 edition. Four schools- Rutgers, Vanderbilt, LaSalle, and Virginia will play in Brooklyn for the semifinals, consolation and championship game, with the remaining schools playing out a second bracket at a campus site, the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.
